ACSM and NSPS are continuing the fight
to save nationwide GPS for our members. The groups submitted comments
to the FCC regarding the Technical Working Group's
report, stating that we oppose LightSquared's plan, as well as
its proposed "solution" and requesting that the FCC take no further
action until there is absolute certainty that LightSquared's
plan will not harm GPS.

Thompson has long served the surveying profession in North Carolina through his role at the North Carolina Geodetic Survey, but that is just the beginning of the story. Thompson has served in many capacities with the North Carolina Society of Surveyors, and in NSPS. Thompson has served as a Surveyor member of the N.C. Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors since
2004; his current term runs through 2013. His service in NCEES, including Chair of the Surveying and EPS Committees, has benefited the profession of surveying immensely. In 2011, Thompson was nominated by ACSM to FGDC's National Geospatial Advisory Committee and subsequently appointed to a three-year term. Dish Network learning from LightSquared pushback
Dish Network's Charlie Ergen was interviewed by The Denver Business Journal, saying that LightSquared rushed into business and didn't vet its business thoroughly enough with regulators. In response to recent concerns raised in FCC filings about the network his company hopes to launch, Ergen said: "Let's get those arguments out up front, before we spend another $3 billion" ... "If it doesn't work, we'll pack our bags and go home
having lost $3 billion."

Falcone's Harbinger capital down 17 percent in September
Reuters reports that Harbinger Capital Partners, the New York hedge fund that controls LightSquared, lost nearly 17 percent in September as
LightSquared faced regulatory hurdles. The article cites unnamed investors, one of whom said: "(Philip) Falcone waited until the end of the quarter to account for all the problems they are facing with LightSquared and that is clearly reflected in these numbers." The story was picked up by outlets including City AM, FINalternatives and Business Insider.
Grassley unlikely to pursue subpoena on communications about LightSquared
Communications Daily reports that Senate Judiciary Committee ranking member Chuck Grassley is not likely to issue subpoenas to force LightSquared and the FCC to turn over communications about the company.

LightSquared has other options if the upper 10 MHz of its L-band spectrum proves unable to coexist with GPS services, Jeff
Carlisle, LightSquared executive vice president-regulatory affairs, told House Science Committee Chairman Ralph Hall, R-Texas, in a written response. Carlisle was responding to a series of questions submitted by Hall and other committee members as part of the committee's hearing on LightSquared's effect on federal science activities (SW Sept 12 p1).
CTIA raises interference concerns on dish waiver
SATELLITE WEEK, Oct. 24
Dish's proposed waiver that would clear the way for the company to launch wireless broadband service in the 2 GHz band is meeting resistance from wireless carriers, led by CTIA. In a further demonstration of how difficult it will be to bring any new band online for wireless broadband, CTIA said in light of questions that have arisen over LightSquared's network, the FCC should look closely at interference issues before granting a waiver.

Charging spectrum fees for terrestrial use of mobile satellite service spectrum is bad policy and could slow investment in services there, Dish Network Chairman Charlie Ergen said Oct. 17, at a Silicon Flatirons
event. Dish is buying DBSD and TerreStar and hopes to make use of their terrestrial spectrum. The issue of spectrum fees was recently raised as a revenue-generating component of President Barack Obama's American Jobs Act.

LWG member: 'Proposed LAS 1.4 spec is broken'

On Aug. 22, the LAS Working Group of the ASPRS Lidar Division released a draft proposal for version 1.4 of the LAS specification for review. Based on the LWG
operating protocol, the revised draft was first circulated among the core group through email, with revisions made until everyone within the LWG was in agreement.

Galileo IOV satellites succesfully launched into orbit

The first pair of satellites for Europe's Galileo global navigation satellite system has been lofted into orbit by the first Russian Soyuz vehicle ever launched from Europe's Spaceport in French Guiana in a milestone mission, reports the European Space Agency. The launch occurred one day after initially scheduled to resolve a problem with the ground-support fueling system.
