U.S. grants Detroit 3, suppliers millions for fuel savings, jobs

The Obama administration awarded $187 million in grants to major automakers and suppliers to boost fuel efficiency. The awards are funded by the $787 billion stimulus to nine companies, including General Motors Co., Ford Motor Co., Chrysler Group LLC, Daimler AG and Delphi Holdings LLP. The companies said the awards will create 500 jobs and by 2015 the projects are expected to create over 6,000 jobs. More

Cummins receives $54 million in funding for truck projects

Cummins will receive nearly $54 million in funding from the Department of Energy (DOE) for two projects aimed at improving fuel efficiency in heavy-duty and light-duty vehicles, according to an announcement made by United States Secretary of Energy Dr. Steven Chu at Cummins' Columbus Technical Center, Columbus, Ind. The Cummins awards were among nine project awards, totaling more than $187 million. More

Jobless claims rise 11,000 for week

Initial jobless claims rose by 11,000 last week, the Labor Department said Thursday. Claims rose to 444,000, topping the 437,000 new claims forecast by economists, Bloomberg reported. More

Big drop in UK van and truck demand through 2009

Data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders show last year's van and truck registrations down 36.2 percent to 221,132. The figure for December was down 20.6 percent to 16,131. Over the year, vans dropped 35.6 percent to 186,386 but were down 14.3 percent in December. Trucks were down 39.5 percent to 34,746 for the year and down 46.9 percent in December. More
