Navistar International Corp. is making money, even in the toughest truck market in 50 years, and intends to make more by winning additional market share and introducing new products here and overseas. Medium and heavy truck sales up 2 percent in December

Medium and heavy truck sales were up 2 percent in December over the same period a year ago and down 28 percent for the year, according to figures compiled by Wards Communications. Dealers sold 36,066 trucks with GVW ratings above 10,000 pounds during the month, up from December 2008
(35,523) and up 37 percent over November 2009 (26,421).

Net heavy-duty truck orders increase in December

Net orders for heavy-duty Class 8 commercial vehicles rose to 11,919 units in December, up 37 percent from December 2008, according to figures compiled by ACT Research Co (ACT). In the latest release of the State of the Industry: Classes 5-8 Vehicles, ACT indicated the last four months of 2009 were the strongest of a very soft year for Class 8 net orders. For the full year, Class 8 net orders were 33 percent below 2008 levels. Medium-duty Class 5-7 net orders were
down from December of last year and down 35 percent for the full year.

Housing starts dropped 4 percent in December while building permits rose to the highest level in a year, the Commerce Department said.
Starts fell to an annual rate of 557,000 units, Commerce said. The level was lower than economists' projections of a 572,000 pace, Bloomberg reported.

Jobless claims surge to two-month high

The number of Americans filing first-time claims for unemployment insurance surged to a 2-month high last week, the government said.
There were 482,000 initial job claims filed in the week ended Jan. 16, up 36,000 from a revised 446,000 the previous week, the Labor Department said in a weekly report.
