Ford: First profitable year since '05

Ford Motor reported its first full-year
profit since 2005 and said it expects to be profitable again in 2010.
The automaker, which has outpaced the turnaround at both its domestic and some overseas rivals, said Thursday that it earned $2.7 billion in 2009. The company was helped by special items that added $2.6 billion to its bottom line during the year. More

actually. They have been built by Smith Electric Vehicles, an established British brand. The American company, a licensee based in Kansas City, Mo., began deliveries in December.

The Federal Reserve voted for a 10th straight time to keep a key U.S. interest rate at a record low "target
range" of zero to 0.25 percent.
The Fed last held the federal funds interest rate—the rate that banks charge each other—in December; it had first lowered rate to the zero range a year earlier, in December 2008.

More than half of General
Motors Co. and Chrysler Group LLC's dealers that were ordered closed by the company appealed ahead of a midnight deadline set by Congress.
India Johnson, a senior vice president at the American Arbitration Association said that as of this afternoon, it had received between 1,550 and 1,560 appeals out of nearly 3,000 dealers.
But Johnson said appeals are still arriving by mail—and will be accepted if postmarked before the midnight deadline. A final tally won't be in place until Friday, she
said.

Ford: Benefits outweigh disadvantages of not taking aid

Ford Motor Chief Executive Alan Mulally said the automaker faced some financial handicap against General Motors and Chrysler thanks to their government-sponsored bankruptcies. Mulally, speaking to reporters at the Washington Auto Show,
said the benefit to Ford from avoiding the nearly $80 billion in aid taken by GM and Chrysler from the U.S. government "far outweighs the disadvantages."

Whitacre to become GM's permanent CEO

General Motors' board of directors, hoping to bring some stability to the Detroit automaker, has stopped its search for a new CEO and named Ed Whitacre as the permanent chief executive.
Whitacre, who is also chairman, has served as interim CEO since
December. He said the board of directors asked him last week to stay on as CEO.

New home sales fell 7.6 percent in December, the Commerce Department said.
Sales declined to an annual rate of 342,000 units, the lowest since March, Commerce said.
