Purchasing.com Share
After double-digit sales declines in class 4-8 trucks in each of the past three years, even a projected 7
percent pickup this year to just under 213,000 vehicles will be the lowest one-year total since IHS Global Insight began tracking data in 1975. More

Ford unveiled an electric version of its Transit Connect work van ahead of the Chicago Auto Show. The 2011 Transit
Connect Electric, which is expected to appear in fleets later this year, will offer a range of 80 miles per charge and a top speed of 75 miles per hour. The van is equipped with a 28 kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack that recharges with a 240-volt outlet in six to eight hours. The Transit Connect Electric is also 120 volt compatible (though charge time is likely to be considerably longer). Ford says the battery pack should last the life of the vehicle.

U.K. van registrations down, trucks still sinking
SMMT UK
Share

January registration data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders shows vans and trucks at 13,099 in January and down 34.5 percent to 219,450 for the rolling year. There were 1,553 trucks over 3.5 tonnes registered in the month, the lowest monthly total on record. The
rolling year total was down 40.6 percent to 33,263. Vans up to 3.5 tonnes fared a little better with 11,546 registered in the month. The rolling year total is down 33.2 percent to 186,187. "New van and truck registrations continue to reflect a weak economic recovery and businesses reluctant to commit to new investment," said Paul Everitt, SMMT chief executive. The slow start to the year leaves truck makers "very disappointed. It is extremely important that government uses the upcoming
Budget to encourage new investment in capital goods and help re-build business confidence."

medium- and heavy-duty hybrid trucks and buses has opened for business today at the website "CaliforniaHVIP.org." The Hybrid Truck and Bus Voucher Incentive Program (HVIP) was created by the California Air Resources Board (ARB) to help California truck and bus buyers to buy these advanced, low-emission vehicles by providing vouchers to directly reduce their cost. HVIP provides buyers with purchase vouchers ranging from $10,000 to $45,000 per eligible vehicle. However, vouchers are only
available on a first-come, first-served basis and buyers (fleets) are limited to no more than 100 vouchers each.
