Housing starts climb in January

Housing starts rose 2.8 percent in January while building permits fell 4.9 percent, the Commerce Department said Wednesday.
Starts rose to an annual rate of 591,000 units, Commerce said. The level was higher than economists' projections
of a 580,000 pace, Bloomberg reported.

On the heels of the December rush to buy trucks before the EPA 2010 mandate went into effect, January truck net orders slipped 18 percent from the year-ago month, according to ACT Research. ACT expected January orders to be weak with the new EPA 2010 emissions mandate, and orders did
fall to 6,513 units, the researchers said in the latest release of State of the Industry: Classes 5-8 Vehicles.

Initial jobless claims grew by 31,000 last week, the Labor Department said. Claims increased to 473,000, Bloomberg reported. Last week's claims revised to 442,000, up from the 440,000 originally reported, which was the lowest level in five weeks.

Prices paid to U.S. producers rose 1.4 percent in January, the Labor Department said. The producer price index gain followed a 0.4 percent increase in December. The core PPI, which excludes food and energy, grew 0.3 percent.
