The January sales figures for heavy-duty commercial trucks are in, and the numbers are still depressed. Orders for heavy-duty Class 8 trucks totaled 6513 units, down 18 percent compared to January 2009. Medium-duty Class 5-7
trucks didn't fare much better with a 6-percent drop. The attributed culprits of the freight recession are, once again, the economy and higher truck prices.

New home sales fell to a record low rate in January, the Commerce Department said Wednesday.
Sales plunged 11 percent to an annual rate of 309,000 units, from 348,000 in December. It was the lowest rate on record, Commerce said.

Federal safety regulators have proposed a set of guidelines for states to create laws that
would ban text messaging while driving.
The sample state law comes amid growing concern about the risks of texting while driving. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), nearly 6,000 people died in 2008 in crashes involving a distracted or inattentive driver, and more than half a million were injured.

increasing production rates" as truck sales to emerging markets improve. Volvo said it saw an increase in demand from Brazil, where economic growth, tax incentives and subsidized financing helped triple January sales.
