New home sales fall to record low

New home sales fell to a record low rate in January, the Commerce Department announced.
Sales plunged 11 percent to an annual rate of 309,000 units, from 348,000 in December. It was the lowest rate on record, Commerce said.

Net orders for Class 8 trucks in February jumped 19.7 percent from January, when orders were the lowest since 2002, according to preliminary data released by FTR Associates. In February, net orders for all major North American OEMs were at
7,628 units, which was above the February 2009 figures. However, orders were still below the 2009 average of 10,064 units, FTR said. The figure includes U.S., Canada, Mexico and exports.

Obama signs measure restoring transportation funds

President Obama signed a bill
reinstating transportation funding that had caused a two-day furlough of 2,000 U.S. Department of Transportation employees. The measure, which also extended unemployment benefits, was passed 78-19 by the Senate after Sen. Jim Bunning (R-Ky.) ended his effort to block the measure, which had resulted in the DOT furloughs on Monday and Tuesday.

Consumer personal spending rose 0.5 in January, marking the
fourth straight increase, the Commerce Department said. The increase followed a revised 0.3 percent gain in December that was greater than originally reported, Commerce said. Incomes rose 0.1 percent.

Fourth-quarter productivity revised upward

Worker productivity jumped 6.9 percent in the fourth quarter, capping the largest one-year gain since
2002, the Labor Department said Thursday.
The level was higher than an originally reported 6.2 percent rate, Labor said. The full-year productivity rate was 3.8 percent, Labor said.

The U.S. economy's service sector improved in February, the Institute for Supply Management said Wednesday. ISM's monthly services index rose to a 53 reading, from 50.5 in January, ISM said in its monthly report.
