Dodge makes Ram separate brand

There's a new head of Dodge Ram and his name is Fred Diaz Jr. Appointed president and CEO of the Dodge Ram brand on October 5, 2009, after a dramatic shakeup at the corporate headquarters, Mr. Diaz is a long-time Dodge truck staff member, with deep roots in Texas. This appointment comes on the heels of a larger announcement that Fiat decided to split the Dodge brand in two, separating Dodge cars from Dodge trucks. More

The number of newly laid-off workers seeking unemployment insurance was unchanged last week, remaining above the level that would indicate the economy is adding jobs. Still, new claims—which are considered a gauge of the pace of layoffs and an indication of companies' willingness to hire new workers—are down about 22 percent from this spring. More


Housing starts drop 11 percent in October

Housing starts fell 11 percent in October, while building permits also declined, the Commerce Department said. Starts fell to an annual rate of 529,000 units, the lowest level since April, from a 592,000 rate in September that was higher than previously estimated. More

A letter signed by the chairmen and ranking minority members of the Senate Environment and Public Works, Commerce, Banking and Finance Committees was sent Tuesday to Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.). Hybrid trucks gaining ground globally

A new study forecasts a big global spike in hybrid purchases by fleets over the next five to six years, with medium- and heavy-duty trucks along with buses comprising the biggest growth categories. According to Boulder, CO-based consulting firm Pike Research, cumulative sales of hybrid vehicles in the fleet sector should total nearly four million worldwide between 2009 and 2015, with hybrid fleet sales increasing from 300,000 units in 2009 to more than 830,000 units by 2015. Consumer confidence declines in November

U.S. consumer confidence declined this month, according to the preliminary Reuters/University of Michigan monthly consumer sentiment index. The preliminary index for the month fell to a 66 reading from 70.6 in October, the survey reported. More


EPA certifies Volvo, Mack engines for 2010

Volvo Trucks North America and Mack Trucks said Monday that the Environmental Protection Agency has certified their engines as meeting the 2010 diesel emissions standards. VTNA said that the D11 and D13 engines were certified by both the EPA and the California Air Resources Board. Volvo is the first truck manufacturer to have its heavy duty diesel engines certified by both agencies, Volvo said in a statement. More


New vehicle registrations down 38.7 percent in third quarter

A reflection of continued softness in the commercial market and downward pressure on demand, new registrations for commercial vehicles during the third quarter were down 38.7 percent from the 2008 period, according to the September issue of Polk Commercial Vehicle Solutions' Commercial Vehicle Market Intelligence Report. As a result, Polk has reduced its Index of U.S. Commercial Vehicle Activity for the 2009 calendar year by 9,000 units, with the forecast that 2009 will end at about 323,000 units. More
