Ford's turnaround gains momentum

Jobless claims plummet to 14-month low

The number of first-time filers for unemployment insurance fell to 466,000, the lowest level in 14 months, according to a government report. That's the lowest number in the Labor Department figures since the week ended Sept. 13, 2008, and a decrease of 35,000 from the previous week's downwardly revised figure of 501,000. More

Consumers log stronger-than-expected spending rise

Consumers got back in the buying mood in October as their incomes grew modestly, an encouraging sign for the budding economic recovery. The Commerce Department reported Wednesday that consumer spending rose a brisk 0.7 percent last month, following a pullback in September when spending plunged by 0.6 percent. More


Existing home sales jump 10.1 percent

Existing homes sales jumped in October to the highest level since February 2007, the National Association of Realtors said Monday. Sales increased 10.1 percent to an annual rate of 6.1 million homes, the group said in its monthly report. More


Chrysler says Ram may add heavy truck to portfolio as part of branding strategy

A Chrysler LLC executive said the company is establishing the Ram name as a separate brand apart from Dodge and may add a Class 8 truck to its portfolio. Fred Diaz Jr., CEO of Ram, said that Chrysler wanted to create a unique brand that would emphasize its focus on trucks as the company expands its commercial vehicle lineup. More


Diesel continues to fall, but slowly

The average price of diesel fell slightly this week, landing at $2.787, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. This is the third straight week the fuel has been dropping, down from last week's average of $2.79. Prior to the declines, diesel prices had gained 22.6 cents. This week's reading is about 12 cents higher than the same week last year. More


Third-quarter GDP revised downward to 2.8 percent from 3.5 percent

The U.S. economy expanded at a lower rate than previously reported in the third quarter, growing at a 2.8 percent annual rate versus the 3.5 percent reported last month, the Commerce Department said. The gross domestic product gain was the first in a year and the revised increase matched economists’ forecasts, Bloomberg reported. More
