More independent oversight is needed to combat bribery, extortion, collusive bidding and other illegal activities in Canada's commercial construction industry, a recent study has found. The study, commissioned by Public Safety Canada and released under access-to-information laws, said a lack of transparency and accountability puts the industry at "moderate to high risk" of corruption and organized criminal activity. Crane drops section of Port Mann Bridge into British Columbia River

A crane tipped off its tracks on the Port Mann bridge construction project east of Vancouver on Feb. 10 and dropped a segment of the bridge into the Fraser River. Bridge project spokesman Max Logan said the gantry crane, which is designed to move on rails, is secure and nobody was hurt, but a 90-ton section of the bridge deck the crane was moving fell into the Fraser River. The CAWIC career centre lets members post their resumes and respond to job postings in the construction sector. All postings are available for public viewing and non-members may post positions for a fee. More

Arizona city looks to Bluetooth to track traffic

Chandler, Ariz., says that it is the first city in the U.S. to use Bluetooth to estimate traffic times on freeways, according to the East Valley Tribune. The city uses Bluetooth detectors to track the movement of cell phones in passing vehicles. Data is also gathered from the Arizona Department of Transportation's network of sensors on the freeway. A computer then adds the freeway and surface street travel time to display on message boards on the freeway. Each message board posts travel times to two points on the freeway. More
