Toronto transit agency Metrolinx to take 'modest first step' into real estate

The Toronto regional transit agency will take an unprecedented step into the real estate business recently when it issues a request for proposals to develop four of its Eglinton-Crosstown station properties. Following in the footsteps of financially successful transit agencies overseas, Metrolinx's plan will aggressively seek returns on transit investments by ensuring new stations are parts of mixed-use buildings from Day One.

Construction of CIBC Pan Am/Parapan Am Athletes' Village complete

Ontario is one step closer to being Games ready with the completion of construction of the CIBC Pan Am/Parapan Am Athletes' Village. TO2015 will now begin the final preparations to ensure the Village is Games ready. The Village will be home to 7,100 athletes and team officials during the Pan American Games, and 3,200 athletes and team officials during the Parapan American Games.

Beef up bus service, Hamiltonians tell councillors

Residents want better bus service all over Hamilton, councillors heard repeatedly at an annual public meeting on the city budget. Around 30 people showed up at City Hall to share their budget beefs and wish-lists, with transit topping those lists along with arts funding and snow-clearing.

The Ontario government's climate change discussion paper, released on Feb. 12, is essentially a laundry list of public policies that have been sought by environmentalists and allies for decades. Among them are smart growth, public transit, electric cars, biofuels, manual transportation (walking/biking), more recycling, replacing traditional manufacturing with green-tech manufacturing and, now, "putting a price on carbon."

UPX trains enter intensive, pre-launch testing

Just as the Ontario Liberal government has cleared the tracks for electrification of the new Union Pearson Express (UPX) train, GO train riders can expect to see more of the green and gray trains that travelers will ride when the service launches later this year. On Monday, Metrolinx entered its intensive testing phase of the new diesel multiple units that will furnish the Union Station to Pearson service when it opens before the Pan Am Games this summer.
