White House 'Connect Home' pilot program brings Internet to low-income children
The White House announced recently a broad initiative that will bring high-speed Internet access to over 275,000 low-income families nationwide. The Obama administration said the pilot program will be launched in 27 cities, including Boston, New York, and Seattle, and Oklahoma's Choctaw Tribal Nation. The effort will initially connect almost 200,000 kids to the Internet.

Science teacher engages 6th-graders with technology and hands-on projects

Marvin Cadornigara says it was a happy accident that he became a teacher. While still living in the Philippines, he had planned a career in medical technology. But when he couldn't find a job, Cadornigara took a short-term substitute post as a high school teacher. "I figured out I loved it," said Cadornigara, 49, who now teaches science to students at the New Explorations into Science Technology and Math school, known as NEST+m, in Manhattan.

4 apps that make writing with an iPad possible
Tablets are a fantastic tool for media creation. But when it comes to more traditional needs, like writing, laptop or desktop computers are still the way to go (or so the conventional wisdom says). But as it turns out, tablets are extremely versatile tools for supporting writing instruction in the classroom, for everyone from our littlest learners to high schoolers and beyond. Why use tablets for student writing? Research indicates that using digital tools in teaching student writing encourages students to be more invested in their writing, facilitates collaboration, encourages creativity and personal expression, and allows students to share their work with a wider and more varied audience.
Are interactive books in the future for learning?
As classrooms become digitalized, the Hechinger Report looks at the current place — and future — of "transmedia" books, or hybrid books that are meant to be both read and watched. "Welcome to the Brave New World of reading, the clickable, interactive future of books. Just as digital technology is transforming our work, our social lives and our family ties, it's transforming the slow, solitary act of reading. Think beyond paper vs. pixels — this cuts to the very core of what it means to read a book," the article said.

iPads in the classroom: The right questions you should ask
The pressure is on to make sure the education of U.S. students is on track with their global peers. Unfortunately, according to a 2015 report by Pew Research Center, that's not the case, particularly in the areas of science and math. It's no wonder, then, that in the quest for educational advancement, teachers want their students to have access to the newest, theories, processes and technologies to help the students excel. One of the most popular technologies has been the introduction of tablets, particularly, iPads, in the classroom.
'Flipped museum' pilot upends traditional field trip model
The "flipped learning" movement is spreading — and not just in classrooms. The North Carolina Museum of Art has developed a pilot program modeled after a flipped classroom, in which the traditional instructional approach is reversed. In flipped classrooms, students prepare for class instruction at home with extensive online work, often through reading or videos, so that they can engage in more analytical, in-depth, project-based work during class time. The North Carolina museum is trying to order students' experiences in a similar way.
Technology holds promise for students with poor vocabulary skills
In 1995, the researchers Betty Hart and Todd R. Risley published the results of their groundbreaking study that found 4-year-olds from working-class families and families on welfare had considerably smaller vocabularies than their age-mates from professional families. This difference has been called "the 30-million-word gap." One reason their work has been so influential is that it helped quantify the challenge education systems face when children enter school with vast differences in educational readiness. The question is: What have we learned since then? Twenty years later, why are so many learners in our schools still struggling? The simple answer is that there's much more to it than a vocabulary deficit.

Project Connect takes action to support K-12 libraries, librarians
Project Connect has announced new initiatives designed to support the cause of future-ready libraries and librarians. The organization's Library Leadership Committee held its first round of think-tank sessions at the ISTE 2015 Conference in Philadelphia, where the team developed plans to advocate for school library programs through the promotion of innovative and progressive models in use around the country.
