Gas prices may have slightly increased over the past month — from $2.05 for regular gas in April to the current average of $2.29 — but these prices still beat those of this time last year, hands down. And so with a more hopeful economy, travel plans are looking good across the nation with 32.4 million Americans expected to take a trip over the Memorial Day holiday weekend, according to a recent AAA survey. On the snow-covered sales lot at the Great Lakes RV Center, in Elkhart, Ind., owner Rob Reid talked about what life is like as an endangered species. Throughout the year, Reid has watched eight recreational-vehicle dealerships close their doors, leaving four others and himself in the immediate area to fight for the few customers that still bother to visit. This year, Reid has sold about 50 fewer vehicles than he did last year, and his gross revenue is down by nearly $400,000. He's had to pour more than $250,000 of his own cash into the business to keep it afloat. More

With the summer camping season fast approaching, more than 100,000 reservations have been booked by RV enthusiasts and other campers at New York state campgrounds, and those who are coming plan to stay a little longer. Advance reservations at campgrounds operated by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation are up 5.2 percent and the number of nights reserved at the properties are up 7 percent over last year. RV Maker Buys Fleetwood Plant Near La Grande, Ore.

An Eastern Oregon RV maker bought the former Fleetwood Enterprises travel trailer plant near La Grande, Ore. A Northwood Manufacturing official told The Observer newspaper that the price was a little more than $2 million. The sale hearing and auction took place this week in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Riverside, Calif. Fleetwood Enterprises closed the La Grande plant in March, laying off about 160 workers. More
