For a recreational vehicle industry pummeled by high fuel prices and a ruinous economy, a 20 mpg motor home, especially one priced below $100,000, could be a welcome bit of good news among all the bad. Alas, despite Winnebago's optimistic claim, about 16 mpg was about the best I could average in the Winnebago View over nearly 1,000 miles of testing, much of it driven below the speed limit. When operated at highway speeds — yes, it can cruise at 75 miles an hour — fuel-efficiency dives to a range of 12 to 14 m.p.g. Even that, however, is easily double the mileage of most RVs.

Encouraged by the National Association of RV Parks and Campgrounds' green-parks initiative launched two years ago, an increasing number of campgrounds are making investments aimed at saving water and energy. Some campgrounds are utilizing solar energy to warm pool water, while others are replacing propane heating systems with wood-burning stoves fueled by lawn and tree clippings. Indiana Town Proposes Ban on RV and Truck Parking

The city council of Hobart, Ind., has passed the first vote of a proposal to prohibit trucks and RVs from parking in city parking lots. Violators could be fined up to $2,500. Hobart is 38 miles from Chicago and 151 miles from Indianapolis. The proposal was approved on a 5-2 vote and is aimed at truck drivers who in recent months have turned parking lots along U.S. 30 into de facto truck stops. More
