Roving retirees in RVs volunteer at Florida nonprofits The Orlando Sentinel Share     Like a lot of retirees, Art and Sylvia Rogers figured they would spend their golden years tooling around the country in a motor home, playing shuffleboard and lounging by some RV village's pool. It took two weeks to discover they hated it. "We were bored for the first time in our lives," 70-year-old Art Rogers said. "We decided playing old-people games was just not for us." Instead, in the spring of 2008, they enlisted with a group called Roving Volunteers in Christ's Service — retired couples who spend three to nine months on the road each year, working for Christian-based nonprofit organizations and living out of their RVs. Nearly 200 of the nation's approximately 8,000 RV parks and resorts are selling their campsites, and renting them out for the site-owners so that they can generate rental income when they're away. Mogens Hermansen is what you'd call a working snowbird. He lives in Memphis, but spends much of the winter enjoying the sunshine in southern Alabama. But unlike most snowbirds, Hermansen and his wife don't have to worry about reserving a site for their 45-foot Beaver motor home.
