Entrepreneur who captured America's affection for RVs
The Wall Street Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
In the midst of a business downturn for recreational vehicles in 1980, Wade Thompson purchased an iconic but failing brand, Airstream, and turned it into a money maker within a year. Thompson, who died Nov. 12 at the age of 69, went on to add a dozen RV manufacturers to the roster of Thor Industries Inc., which became the nation's biggest RV manufacturer by sales. The RV industry went through another downturn starting in 2007, when a sharp rise in oil prices was followed by recession. Thor closed factories and cut jobs, but stayed profitable even as leading rivals filed for bankruptcy. More

National park getaway: Sagamore Hill National Historic Site
MotorHome Magazine    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Less than a week from now, millions of us will be thronging airports and gingerly pulling onto crowded highways, bound for different places, but most of us headed home. At certain times of year, that destination exerts a magnetic force on us. We can empathize with our nation's 26th president, Theodore Roosevelt, who wrote to one of his children, "There isn't any place in the world like home."  More

Winter bookings at recreational vehicle parks in metropolitan Phoenix are up after three years of decline, a sign it may be a good year for the industry that caters to "snowbirds." Advance reservations for campers are up at about a dozen of the Arizona's large RV parks and campgrounds, said Jeff Crider, an industry-association spokesman, "which highlights signs of a stronger snowbird season," he added. Nearly 17,000 camping and RV enthusiasts participated in the online survey, which evaluated guest experiences at 1,840 independent campgrounds and RV resorts affiliated with the National Association of RV Parks and Campgrounds. The survey was for privately run locations only—national and state parks were not included. More

Last year the floor at the Valley Screen Process Company in Mishawaka, Ind., was quiet. There were only a few dozen workers doing the work of 75. The RV industry was hit hard and suppliers were stuck with months' worth of excess inventory. "We had to tell our staff that we were going to lay them off over the holidays and we really didn't know if we were going to be able to call them back," said Valley Stream CEO Karen Barnett. More

Gas prices fall to begin busy travel week
The Associated Press via Google News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Retail gasoline prices headed downward in most places to begin one of the country's busiest travel weeks, with more than 33 million people expected to hit the road for the Thanksgiving holiday. Americans are remaining closer to home because of anxiety about the economy and demand for gasoline is weaker now than it was last year at this time. That is telling because a gallon of gasoline then cost only $1.93 as the economic crisis unfolded in 2008.
