John Schalmo was driving with his family to his son's graduation from boot camp in August 2004 when he felt a vibration, then a tire blow underneath his RV. The motor home slid down an embankment, across an interstate on-ramp and into some trees. Schalmo suffered multiple broken bones. His mother-in-law's face was shattered. His father-in-law lost both his legs. More

Best states to be a snowbird
BellaOnline    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Now that the winter winds and early frost warnings have given us a glimpse of what we can look forward to in the coming months, it's time for many RVers to prepare to head south for the winter. For those who are making their maiden snowbird migration south, the question may still remain — just where do I go? The three most popular states for snowbirds are Arizona, Texas and Florida, and all for good reasons besides the warm weather. Each has its own appeal and I've been lucky enough to spend quality time in each of them during the winter season. While each of these locations can't exactly guarantee perfect weather all winter long, it always beats single digit temperatures and shoveling snow. More

It used to be that firearms were prohibited in national parks — except in some Alaska parks and those parks that allow hunting. But a change in federal law now allows firearms in many national parks. People who can legally possess firearms under federal and state law can now possess those firearms in the national parks in that state. More

On a camping trip, the futuristic RV feels like a home
away from home

Los Angeles Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Since the 2010 Airstream International first set up shop in Los Angeles in the 1920s, the manufacturer, which has since moved to Ohio, has become synonymous with luxury and style. The creme de la creme of trailers, an Airstream is the sort of thing that inspires lust in those who wander. … Airstreams are prized for their aerodynamic architecture and unmistakable "Lost in Space" silver siding assembled from studded sheets of metal. Their exteriors look like lunar modules whose hard corners were melted into round forms during atmospheric reentry. Their interiors are equally NASA'd out, with more storage space and cubbies than seems possible considering their dimensions. More

RVtravel.com    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The rain in Spain may fall mainly on the plain, but when you're in rain country, it most certainly falls on the road. If you're from rain country, this probably isn't a problem, but if you're not experienced with rainy day driving, here are some tips to make your RV journey safer. For instance, be the middle-man: If you have an option of which lane to occupy, take to the middle. Most roads have a crowned surface to encourage water to run off to the side. More

While most RVers rent a campsite for the winter, Linda Haven owns her doublewide and the lot at Lake Bonnet Village in Florida. "I think it's the best hidden secret in Florida," said Haven, who also sits on the board of the co-op association. Her park also allows park models and mobile homes. Haven and her husband were once carefree, on-the-go campers who regained a sense of permanency by buying their site. It's a growing trend in RV world. More
