Collections rise for bail bond no-shows in Texas

In Texas, Cameron County District Attorney Luis V. Saenz said his office may collect twice as many outstanding bail bonds this year compared to last. But the effort, Saenz admits, hasn't received enthusiastic reviews from the county bail bond community.

Bounty hunters have a dangerous job that offers a new experience each time

Bounty hunting often brings the wild west to mind, but in this day and age, finding people who've skipped out on paying their bail is just as prevalent. On this particular evening, Washington Special Service Agents Sam Hansen and Mike Ruchert are looking for Dustin Billings. Billings didn't show up for court after being charged with assault domestic violence and driving with a suspended license. They've been tipped off that he's at his mother's house.

Commercial bail identified as an evidenced-based practice

In a recent letter to the Governor of California, the Little Hoover Commission reports its findings from a year long study on California's criminal justice system. The letter says, "Bail is among the oldest of 'evidenced-based' tools to ensure the defendant's presence at trial. It is vital to public safety and the integrity of the criminal justice system."

Delaware: Bail reform plan seeks to standardize fees
The News Journal via Delaware Online
Testifying at a legislative hearing, Magistrate James Tull complained that when setting bail he never knows how much it will cost the defendant to buy his freedom until trial. That's because some bail companies charge defendants as little as 3 percent up front, and as little as 5 percent total to post secured bond. While most charge 10 percent up front, the difference can be substantial.

North Carolina bondsman running for Ward 2 alderman seat

Micah Grimes has filed as a Board of Alderman candidate for Ward 2, saying he wants to make a difference and bring change to his community. As a bail bondsman, Grimes said he has been able to network with many people in the community and knows most of the residents in Ward 2, many of whom encouraged him to run.

Wisconsin: Bail bonds provision vetoed

The bail bonds provision was added to the budget by the Joint Committee on Finance. The budget provision would have allow those accused of crimes to post bail through commercial bondsmen and let bounty hunters track down those who don’t show up for court.

Delaware consider revised bail bill, 90-day hold for felonies

A Delaware judge could order suspects held without bail for at least 90 days if they are charged with Delaware's two highest classes of felonies, ranging from first-degree murder to burglary, according to a reworked constitutional amendment that could receive a Senate vote very soon.

Three federal judges ordered the release of almost 10,000 inmates in California before the end of 2013, and Gov. Jerry Brown has been vocal in his opposition of that ruling. To further his cause, Brown now has the support of four former governors of California.
