Fugitive arrested after failing to return rented car

Lincoln, Neb., police arrested a man wanted on two warrants after receiving information from a bail and recovery business. Police took William Trejo-Lewis into custody at his girlfriend's home. The U.S. Bail and Recovery Service in Bellevue contacted LPD when they found a car that police say Lewis stole, parked in the area. More

Authorities have arrested a man who went on the lam last month while out on bail as a verdict against him was pending in a case related to a complicated scam at San Francisco's One Rincon Hill residential tower, prosecutors said. Jay Shah, 48, posted bail and then failed to appear in court when a San Francisco Superior Court jury found him guilty of 13 felony counts of grand theft, money laundering and other fraud charges that could result in a sentence of more than 35 years in prison. Officials say the man who was shot by a bail bondsman in Chesapeake, Va., has been arrested. Jason Turner was allegedly shot by a bail bondsman with A. Ace Bail Bond Company while he was being served a warrant for violating his probation and failing a drug test. The warrant for his arrest was issued nine days before the incident involving the bondsman. More

A district court judge in Pittsfield, Mass., ordered a 24-year-old man to jail after he racked up more charges while out on bail. Lance O. Roberts of Pittsfield was already facing a slew of charges stemming from a series of alleged burglaries in Pittsfield when he was arraigned in Central Berkshire District Court on three felonies and a misdemeanor stemming from two separate cases. Roberts had been out on $1,000 bail on some earlier cases. More

A fake profile of Beaufort County Sheriff P.J. Tanner posted on a dating website has been traced to Preston Oates, the tow-truck driver accused of fatally shooting a Bluffton, S.C., resident on Christmas Eve 2010, according to authorities. Investigators also believe Oates posed online as Tanner's wife. Although Oates can't be charged criminally for the postings, he will be back in court soon because authorities believe he violated the terms of his bond, according to 14th Circuit Solicitor Duffie Stone. More

Wisconsin man convicted in child enticement case

A Tomahawk, Wis., man will face 25 years in prison after being found guilty of child enticement. A jury found 23-year-old Abel Jump guilty of child enticement, exposing himself to an underage girl, and bail jumping. He will also face charges of threatening a judge, which allegedly occurred during a recorded jail phone call. More

A Clay County. Minn., judge refused to change the bail conditions for a Fargo man accused of physically and sexually assaulting a woman in her car in downtown Moorhead, Minn., despite the prosecution's revelation that the man is under investigation for alleged offenses in Fargo, N.D. The county attorney's office had requested $1 million bail. Judge Lisa Borgen set conditions of release for Richard Lee Haaland Jr., 46, at $500,000 bail without conditions or $100,000 bail with conditions, including that he have no contact with the victim, submit to random drug testing and not leave Minnesota without written court approval. Haaland posted $100,000 bond through a bail bond company. More

North Carolina fugitive nabbed 4 years after alleged sex crimes

A Fayetteville, N.C., man who left the country in 2009 to avoid prosecution for alleged sex crimes was arrested in Texas as he was returning to North Carolina from Malaysia, authorities said. Brandon Cady, 40, was apprehended at the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport as he was changing planes, said Deputy U.S. Marshal Brandon Taylor, a member of the U.S. Marshals Service Violent Fugitive Task Force. Cady's bail was set at $35,000, according to arrest documents, and he was scheduled to appear back in court in December 2009. Cady was released and promptly disappeared, Taylor said. More

Bond set at $2 million for accused drug offender

Bond was set at $2 million for Ronald McElfresh, a man arrested in Wheeling, W.Va., for threatening probation officers and possessing drugs in Newark, N.J. Licking County Magistrate Mattie Klein increased McElfresh's bond from $250,000 to $1 million on drug offenses after McElfresh failed a drug test then skipped town. McElfresh was the subject of a $10,000 reward offered by AA Cravens Bail Bonds for information about his whereabouts before he was apprehended in Wheeling, W.Va. More
