PIA National: Get ready for the 2014 Legislative Summit
Hundreds of PIA members are getting ready to converge on Capitol Hill in Washington,
D.C., March 26-27, for the 2014 PIA Federal Legislative Summit. The annual event
is a gathering of PIA members from around the country who come together to meet with
their members of Congress.

Winter storm losses and preparedness
Aon Benfield Group said the severe winter weather
experienced around the globe in February cost insurers
over $1 billion. The Aon report is its monthly global
catastrophe report, Impact Forecasting.
Winter weather leads to costly insurance losses
Winter in 2014 in the U.S. has been brutal. A
polar vortex brought bitter cold and snow and ice
to parts of the nation unaccustomed to that type
of weather and to areas used to the cold but not
prepared for the intensity of the vortex.
Obamacare — some survey numbers
The drop-dead date for Affordable Care Act
enrollment is March 31. HealthPocket did a survey
which found a majority of people want the deadline

House passes flood insurance compromise
PIA National is pleased that some of the
mitigation provisions we have advocated in
recent weeks were included in the Homeowner
Flood Insurance Affordability Act of 2013!
It passed the House with a vote of 306 to 91.
The not hard market softening
MarketScout's February report is out. The
commercial market is "moderating." Or so says
MarketScout whose report shows rates rising at a
2 percent composite jump compared to 3 percent in January.
Drones and insurance — not science fiction
This sounds very much like a sci-fi
scenario. Some progressive techies are
proposing an idea being pooh-poohed by
some as preposterous. With that, we note a
future that is always arriving when we least expect it, may have arrived — again.
Farm Bill irony: Obama budget cuts crop insurance
It has been a
month since Congress passed the
Farm Bill. In the bill is a bump to crop-insurance.
The improvement may not be long lasting.
President Barack Obama's 2015 budget proposes trimming

Cyber liability coverage and unreported attacks
New risks and high-profile data breaches have opened up a
new opportunity for agents and brokers to offer cyber liability
coverage. PIA National Senior Vice President Patricia
Borowski addressed the new opportunity in comments in an
article in the March issue of National Underwriter.
TRIA: Demand for coverage surges
The Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee finally
held a hearing on reauthorization of the Terrorism Risk Insurance
Act a couple of weeks ago. TRIA — established in 2002
and renewed for seven-years in 2007 — is set to expire on
Dec. 31. Many in the industry — including the PIA — want
a permanent law and not a series of extensions.
Don't let you agency get sunk by an E&O claim involving watercraft
Curtis Pearsall says: The calendar says spring is here, so there is a strong likelihood
that many customers will be looking to get out on the water at
the earliest possible opportunity. As a result, these customers
will be contacting your agency to make sure their watercraft
coverage is in order.
