Sales improve for landscape companies

The grass is greener on this side of the recession for privately held companies in the lawn and landscaping business, according to new data from Sageworks Inc., a financial information company. Companies in the landscaping services industry, on average, saw sales growth of about ten percent in 2011, rebounding from a decline in 2009 and from about five percent growth in 2010, Sageworks' financial statement analysis of private companies found. More

A Charleston, S.C., judge has ruled that the National Labor Relations Board cannot force private businesses to post notices informing workers about their rights to join or form a union. Chief U.S. District Court Judge David C. Norton said that the requirement exceeds the federal agency's powers, writing, "There is not a single trace of statutory text that indicates Congress intended for the board to proactively regulate employers in this manner." New biofuel could have an edge over ethanol

A biofuel that will be produced commercially in Minnesota is turning out to have major advantages over ethanol, especially for engines that can't burn that fuel at higher concentrations. Scientists who have studied isobutanol, an alcohol fuel made from corn and soon to be manufactured in Luverne, Minn., say it can be easily blended with gasoline at up to 16 percent, packs more energy than ethanol and doesn't appear to damage the engines of older cars, boats and lawn equipment. Gas prices, health care law keep small businesses from hiring

Pain at the gas pump and concern over health care regulations are keeping small business hiring plans on the back burner, according to a survey released recently. Even though small business owners are feeling slightly more optimistic, according to the survey from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, they aren't yet ramping up hiring. PLANET joins new H-2B lawsuit over program rule

The Professional Landcare Network is among a group that filed a federal lawsuit April 16, a last-ditch effort to stop the implementation of a new H-2B program rule set to become effective April 23. According to PLANET, the program rule it seeks to block would require employers to "hire any qualified U.S. worker up to 21 days before an H-2B worker is scheduled to begin." That's even if the employer already has offered the job to an H-2B worker, assisted with that worker's visa process and paid for the worker's transportation, housing and other fees. The proposed rule also would involve labor unions in the hiring process. More
