Walgreens showcases new look in 640 stores

From Oct. 13: Walgreens is unveiling a new sophisticated look for 640 of its brick-and-mortars. The remodeled or new stores incorporate a contemporary design that adds a fresh approach to the interiors and exteriors and creates an airy and roomy atmosphere. The new look is most apparent in the 14 flagship stores including the three prominent locations in New York's Empire State Building, Chicago's Wrigley Building and Hollywood's Sunset and Vine, reported the Lansing State Journal.

Target vendor says hackers breached data link used for billing
Reuters via Chicago Tribune
From Feb. 6: The Target Corp hackers managed to break into its payments network by first breaching a "data connection" between the U.S. retailer and its heating and ventilation systems contractor, a representative for the contractor said. The data connection was used by the vendor, Fazio Mechanical Services, to bill Target and exchange contract and project management information with the retailer, according to Dick Roberts, a public relations representative for Fazio.

How facility managers handle increasing workload, shrinking budget, staff

From Sept. 26: Ask facility managers what their biggest concern about the job is, and the odds are good that the response will focus on not having enough resources or the ever-increasing workload. Those two concerns consistently top the list of challenges that facility managers face, according to Building Operating Management's annual FM Pulse survey; this year, 30 percent of respondents say their No. 1 concern is not having enough resources.

The physical store is not dead, just changing

From Oct. 1: Executives from companies such as Target and eBay were quick to say that the brick-and-mortar was anything but dead to a room full of digital retailers at Shop.org Summit. In the breakout session titled, "Do you need the physical store?" Healy Cypher, head of retail innovation, eBay, opened by listing some staggering facts about the progress of digital. He noted that smartphone consumers are going on their devices on average 150 times a day and that every day more iPhones are sold than babies born in the world.

Starbucks recycles coffee to make milk

From May 5: Starbucks is recycling coffee beans to make milk for its coffee. The coffee giant is using Menincon’s fermentation technology that allows the used grounds from Starbucks stores in the Tokyo area to be converted into feed for the dairy cows that produce the milk that goes into Starbucks stores’ specialty drinks.

Hawaii's 2 largest shopping malls to close as Hurricane Iselle reaches Oahu

From Aug. 7: Hawaii's two largest malls, Ala Moana Center and Pearlridge Center, will be closed, when Hurricane Iselle is expected to reach Oahu. Kahala Mall in East Honolulu will also close for the day, the mall said on Twitter. Iselle was still being classified as a hurricane as it approached the Big Island, and another hurricane, Julio, was expected to reach the Islands.
