Advertising Age

Online retailers are back in the game, with holiday sales coming in just short of 2007 levels. Given gloomy forecasts for the sector, positive growth in the most important two months of the year provided a much-needed boost following a tepid year. ComScore today reported that e-commerce sales for the November and December period rose 4 percent to $29.1 billion, compared with $28 billion a year ago and $29.2 billion in 2007.

Retailers tap into software to know their customers

Most people
think of the grand challenges in computing Relevant Products/Services as big science projects. But with the holiday shopping season just ended, retail marketing is emerging as a real-world incubator for testing how computer firepower and smart software can be applied to human behavior. Major retailers have long sifted through in-store sales Relevant Products/Services and demographic information to aim goods at different stores and to tightly manage supplies. What is changing, experts say, is the
rapid surge in the amount and types of digital data that retailers can now tap, and the improved computing tools to try to make sense of it.

Retail space opens up as big chains shrink
Los Angeles Times
Share

Surges of
large-scale retail bankruptcies such as Circuit City electronics and Mervyns department stores altered the shopping landscape in 2009 — and experts say 2010 is likely to bring even more changes. Amid a still-tepid economic recovery, big retail chains are expected to continue closing their less productive stores and retrenching on expansion plans. But at the same time, others will be hurtling into the breach to take advantage of falling rents and vacancies in neighborhoods they couldn't get
into a few years ago.
