Shopping center owners start year with optimism as 4th-quarter rents rise

U.S. shopping center owners are starting 2015 on an optimistic note thanks to a solid holiday season and rising rents throughout 2014. Yet, given that retail vacancies remain near historically elevated levels, more bullish news for retail landlords likely will come at a glacial pace. All in, last year was a good one for mall and strip-center owners.

Dallas retailers say they don't have firm grip on bag law

Many Dallas retailers are scrambling to comply with a city ordinance intended to reduce litter from throwaway shopping bags. The law, which began Jan. 1, requires Dallas retailers to charge shoppers 5 cents for most single-use carryout bags, whether paper or plastic. The City Council narrowly adopted the measure in March to address the public mess caused by carelessly tossed bags, especially the plastic variety.

California: 5 new laws that will affect employers, workers

It's 2015 and with the new year comes new state laws that affect California employers and employees. Among them is legislation that affects sick leave use and accrual, employer responsibilities regarding independent contractors, and the inclusion of "abusive conduct" training for supervisors. Retailers' December sales top estimates amid job growth

U.S. retailers including L Brands Inc., Pier 1 Imports Inc. and Gap Inc. posted December same-store sales that topped analysts' estimates as improving employment and falling gas prices encouraged shoppers to spend on gifts. Same-store sales for retailers tracked by Swampscott, Massachusetts-based Retail Metrics Inc. rose 2.9 percent last month, excluding results from drugstores. Analysts had estimated a 2.8 percent gain.

Coach to buy Stuart Weitzman for $574M

Coach has agreed to buy designer shoe company Stuart Weitzman for $574 million. The move is part of Coach's larger plan to revamp its image in the face of declining sales and increased competition. The designer brand will acquire the footwear company from private equity firm Sycamore Partners, and will immediately add to the company's earnings.
