How facility managers can handle occupant complaints

Did you hear the one about the employee who noticed an ant on a raisin on the floor and instead of picking it up and throwing it away, left a note for the facility manager, who happened to be out of the office for three days? Guess how many ants he found when he got back? Or how about the one where it took an IAQ study to mollify the lawyer who insisted he could smell cigarette smoke? And then there's that old chestnut: the toilet paper is too rough, or there's not enough of it, or there's too much of it. Knowing how to handle occupant complaints is a key skill for facility managers.

Uniqlo expands Bay Area fashion footprint, again

Uniqlo, the fast growing Japanese fast-fashion brand, is continuing its Bay Area in California expansion with the addition of three new stores. Slated to open this spring and summer, Uniqlo will be bringing its multicolored ultralight down jackets and skinny pants to Daly City's Serramonte Center, Concord's Sunvalley Shopping Center and the Great Mall of the Bay Area in Milpitas.

Loehmann's to begin liquidation
The Associated Press via CNBC
Loehmann's , a discount retailer which traces its roots back more than 90 years, will soon begin liquidating its inventory. The New York-based retailer filed for bankruptcy protection in December due to limited access to capital and increased competition in the off-price retail niche. It was the company's third bankruptcy filing.

Holiday sales saved by last-minute shoppers, research firm says
The Washington Post
Holiday shoppers who put off their purchases until the last minute led a late surge in sales, according to data released by ShopperTrak, a research firm. Sales in November and December were up 2.7 percent from 2012, which was better than the firm's projected increase of 2.4 percent. But foot-traffic was down more than 14 percent from 2012.

Barnes & Noble promotes Huseby to CEO amid digital shift

Barnes & Noble Inc. promoted Michael Huseby, who has served as its chief financial officer and president, to chief executive officer as the chain struggles to retain customers increasingly shifting to digital books. Huseby also has been elected to the board, the New York-based company said in a statement.

Retail health clinics planned for local CVS stores

Costco's key sales figure tops expectations in December

Costco's key sales figure rose 3 percent in the important December period, topping Wall Street expectations as demand in the U.S. rebounded, the retailer said. Analysts in a Thomson Reuters poll had been calling for same-store sales, a measure of those at stores open longer than a year, to increase by a duller 1.8 percent.

Macy's shares jump on restructuring, layoffs news

Macy's shares jumped more than 7 percent in morning trading Thursday after the retailer announced a series of cost-cutting moves that it said would generate savings of about $100 million annually. The retailer said it will lay off about 1.4 percent of its workforce, close some stores and open others, and combine its Midwest and North regions.
