Target buys leases to expand into Canada by 2013

Target Corp., the second-biggest discount retailer in the U.S., agreed to buy store leases in Canada for C$1.83 billion ($1.85 billion) to expand outside the U.S. for the first time in its history. The leasehold interests apply to as many as 220 sites now run by Zellers Inc., a unit of Canadian department-store chain Hudson's Bay Co., Minneapolis-based Target said in a statement. Target plans to open 100 to 150 sites in Canada in 2013 and 2014. More

Office Depot Inc. is buying Swedish office supply company Svanströms Gruppen in order to expand its presence there. Terms were not disclosed. Office Depot first entered the Swedish market in 2004 through a strategic alliance with AGE Kontor & Data AB. "We've been successful in this market and see continued growth and high potential in the region," Charlie Brown, president of Office Depot's international division, said in a statement. More

Minneapolis-based Buffalo Wild Wings Inc. announced plans to expand its brand across the United States and internationally, with the goal of reaching 1,000 units by 2013. Starbucks brews plan to enter India

Starbucks Corp. unveiled an alliance with India's flagship conglomerate — a move designed to pave the way for retail locations and to sell more Indian coffee worldwide. India remains one of the big untapped markets for the Seattle-based coffee and food company. Chairman Howard Schultz said in an interview from Mumbai that India could one day rival China, where it recently announced plans to more than triple the number of outlets to around 1,500 in five years. NRF convention: Expect some spending uptick in 2011

A retail industry expert presented research at the National Retail Federation convention in New York City that showed shoppers will continue to spend more this year, spurred by a slowly improving job market and an uptick in income. However, Ira Kalish, director of global economics for Deloitte, added that enough shoppers are still struggling with their finances that any increase will be modest. More

The company will open a store in San Francisco for a brand that was originally available only online and in catalogs. The brand, Athleta, was acquired by Gap in 2008 for $150 million. More

TJX launches fierce fight against retail crime

TJX Cos., which suffered a massive data security breach several years ago, is using company investigators to find people suspected of being involved in organized retail crime by following them to homes, pawnshops, and other locations, as well as by filming activity inside and outside stores. The retailer also is conducting reverse stings and using other aggressive tactics as part of a national effort to shut down increasingly sophisticated criminal groups, Eliot J. Green, TJX's national investigations director, said during a presentation at the National Retail Federation conference in New York. More
