Target donates $500,000 and more than one million meals to earthquake victims in Haiti

U.S. retailers ended up having a decent Christmas, with holiday sales at the high end of modest expectations as consumers let loose some pent up demand and retailers carefully managed inventories and promotions. Retail sales rose 3.4
percent in December from the year before, the Commerce Department said. Combined with a 0.9 percent gain in November, retail sales rose 2.3 percent to $509.3 billion year-over-year for the two-month holiday period, to $446.8 billion, the Commerce Department said.

Fossil sees strong Q4 on better-than-expected sales

Watchmaker Fossil Inc said it
expects its quarterly sales and earnings to exceed its prior outlook, helped by stronger wholesale shipments in the U.S. and higher sales in the worldwide direct-to-consumer segment. Fossil, which also sells jewelry, leather goods, sunglasses and apparel, now sees sales of $520 million to $525 million for the fourth quarter ended Jan. 2, up from its prior view of $497 million to $506 million.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the world's largest retailer, said that it would close 10 underperforming Sam's Club stores, including four in California. In the Southland, the warehouse club operator will shut stores in Irvine, La Quinta and Vista. Other closures will include stores in the Sacramento, Houston and Phoenix markets.

Foot Locker Inc. will close 117 stores
this month, most of them Foot Locker and Lady Foot Locker units in the U.S. In all, the company will have shut 190 of its stores during the past fiscal year ending Jan. 30. The company operates about 3,600 stores in 21 countries. Foot Locker Inc. is combining its Lady Foot Locker chain into three of its other brands — Foot Locker, Kids Foot Locker and Footaction. The closures are being blamed on the recession and a shift away from sneakers to other casual footwear.
