Retail CEOs reveal top goals for 2014
Forbes
They'll tap technology to get up close and personal with individual shoppers, mine "big data" for meaningful consumer insight, and invest heavily in fashion makeovers to breath new life into their stores. So said the CEOs of Macy's, J.C. Penney, Bloomingdale's, Ethan Allen, as well as Saks Fifth Avenue’s new president a week into the job.

REI hits the roof to put a ceiling on data center cooling
GreenBiz
A recent data center retrofit undertaken by outdoor products retailer REI offers a vivid illustration of how an unplanned data center can exacerbate a company's power consumption. The brains of the company's e-commerce site and point-of-sale servers for 132 retail stores slowly crept from a small computer room into a 6,000-square-feet space sprawling across nearly an entire floor at its main headquarters outside Seattle.

The View from Europe: The quest for life beyond the compressor
By Andrew Gaved
These look like exciting times for the future of refrigeration. One of the undisputed holy grails for researchers working at the frontiers of refrigeration science is to find a way to cool without requiring compressors and all the inefficiencies that vapor compression brings with it. So it is perhaps not surprising then that a whole coterie of academic researchers have devoted their time to coming up with an alternative technique. But the research, while achieving good results, has almost universally faced a major drawback — the cost of the technology is exorbitant.

Developer: Without rebirth, malls face extinction
CNBC
American malls are facing a rebirth, and without a complete reinvention, they will be extinct within 10 to 15 years, the head of one of the nation's largest privately held real estate companies says. "At one point [the indoor mall] may have met the developer's needs — and even for awhile, the consumer's needs — but it has outlived its usefulness," Rick Caruso, founder and CEO of Caruso Affiliated, said in a keynote address at the National Retail Federation's annual convention in New York.

Can facial-recognition software help stores manage angry customers?
BloombergBusinessweek
There was technology that collects digital currency (otherwise known as coupons) if users agree to watch commercials instead of skipping them. New facial-recognition software claimed to determine gender with better than 90 percent accuracy and age range with about 70 percent accuracy. And, most interesting to me, there was a demonstration of facial-expression recognition software that can read some of our emotions.
