NRF expects retail sales to rise 3.4 percent in 2012
Forbes    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Retail industry sales are expected to rise 3.4 percent to $2.53 trillion in 2012, according to the National Retail Federation — slightly lower than the pace of 2011, in which sales grew 4.7 percent. The NRF excludes the sales of autos, gas and restaurants in its definition of retail sales. Many economists estimate that real U.S. GDP will rise approximately 2.1 to 2.4 percent as the economy is still being plagued by stubbornly high unemployment and uncertainty over job growth, NRF said. Richmond Times-Dispatch    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Retailers hoping to lure back consumers shopping on the Web and via mobile devices have found a new weapon: interactive technology designed to bring the functionality of the Web to their stores. "Basically, I see this as an evolution that will change the way people shop," said Chris Aubrey, vice president of retail marketing for the global shoe company Adidas. Adidas is one of dozens of retailers using technology to create in-store kiosks or monitors to give shoppers all of the information and flexibility of the Internet inside the real world of brick-and-mortar stores. The Associated Press via Los Angels Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
It's not easy going home. Particularly if you're a behemoth commercial enterprise and home is a quaint, historic town. The first store of the upscale cookware giant Williams-Sonoma was in the heart of wine country. But only for two years, as founder Chuck Williams quickly realized what a money-maker he had and moved the store to the bigger market of San Francisco. The $3 billion chain with some 250 stores nationwide wants to come home. It hopes to open a smaller, boutique version of the typical Williams-Sonoma outlet at the original site More

Shoppers in the night: How Canadian, US prices fail to connect
The Globe and Mail    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Cross-border shopping will never be made obsolete; two Statistics Canada studies published last week refute hopes for an eventual convergence of retail prices in the United States and Canada. One of the studies shows — not surprisingly — that price-level differences are especially recalcitrant for food products that are subject to supply management or marketing boards, and for alcoholic beverages and tobacco — which are under the influence of excise taxes and provincial government monopolies. More retail space is under construction in Edmonton, Canada, than anywhere else in the nation, says a new report by commercial real estate firm CBRE. "This energy-based economy is really driving a lot of things in this city from residential construction to industrial demand, and when there's low unemployment, people are buying, so retailers are strong," said Dave Young, senior vice-president and managing director of CBRE's Edmonton office. Bloomberg    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Turkey, where jewelry, fabrics and spices have been haggled over in bazaars for centuries, was among the last European countries to embrace modern shopping centers. It's catching up quickly.
