Staples, Coca-Cola and Campbell's make the Global 100 Sustainability list

Staples, Coca-Cola Enterprises and Campbell's Soup Co., have been named to the Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the World list by Corporate Knights, a media, research and financial products company. Staples is the only U.S. retailer to make the list (ranked 73), while Coca-Cola (ranked 43) and Campbell's (ranked 96) are the only U.S. food and beverage companies named. A total of 18 U.S. companies made the list.

Best Buy sheds cloud computing unit to refocus on retail business

Best Buy appears to be jumping off the cloud. The company said that it is selling its MindShift Technologies cloud-computing business to the Japanese firm Ricoh for an undisclosed amount. Best Buy Co. Inc. is selling MindShift because it is outside the company's main business of electronics retailing, spokesman Jeff Shelman said.

Microsoft sales soar 14 percent

Microsoft reported solid sales and earnings growth Thursday afternoon, handily beating expectations and giving a boost to the company's shares. The software giant posted solid shipments of the Xbox One, selling 3.9 million of the new game consoles. Microsoft has been neck-and-neck with rival Sony, which launched the PlayStation 4 console a week before the Xbox One went on sale.

Outlet shopping center planned for Fort Worth, Texas-area near Cabela's

An outlet shopping center with about 50 stores, to be called The Outlets at Alliance, will be built in far north Fort Worth, Texas. Woodmont Land Co. said it's under contract to buy 45 acres from Hillwood Properties, the developer of Alliance, for the 350,000-square-foot project.

Sears to close flagship Loop location in April

Convenience stores account for 34.3 percent of all US retail outlets

The U.S. convenience store count increased to 151,282 stores as of Dec. 31, a 1.4 percentincrease (2,062 stores) from the year prior, according to the 2014 NACS/Nielsen Convenience Industry Store Count. Convenience stores account for 34.3 percent of all retail outlets in the United States, according to Nielsen, which is significantly higher than the U.S. total of other retail channels including drug stores (41,378 stores), supermarket/supercenter (37,459 stores) and dollar stores (24,853 stores).
