Online shopping won't kill bricks-and-mortar stores
The Vancouver Sun    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Shopping online is growing at an astronomical rate in North America, but that doesn't mean the imminent death of traditional bricks-and-mortar stores, panelists told a conference on shopping centers. In fact, smart retailers who have a strong presence online are finding themselves in better shape than many stores that stick to a traditional model, according to James Smerdon, director of retail and strategic planning for Colliers International. Gallup: Consumer confidence highest in months
Los Angeles Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Notice a certain confidence in your walk these days? U.S. consumers' confidence in the economy is at its highest level since May 2011, according to Gallup. But that's not a huge surprise. The weekly rating by the polling company has trended upward since this summer, and it has happened before. “Americans’ views of current economic conditions are about the same as what they were at the comparable time in the prior two years,” Gallup said in a statement. The company said that in 2010 and 2011, confidence in the economy waned as the year progressed. More

Why J.C. Penney will be the most interesting retailer of 2012
Forbes    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
J.C. Penney just blew up its brand — in a good way — thanks to a new management team with some radical new ideas. J.C. Penney is about to be the most interesting retail story of the year. Late last year, J.C. Penney began building a dream team with Ron Johnson — the man who launched Apple's retail stores — as its new CEO. Johnson cut his retail teeth at Target and from there he poached Michael Francis to serve as J.C. Penney's new president. Francis is largely responsible for Target's branding and marketing efforts. Why shoppers and shopping centers alike now embrace the dollar store
Time magazine    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
At one time, upper- and middle-class shopping centers turned up their noses at dollar stores, assuming that their presence would hurt the image of neighboring retailers, as well as the area as a whole. In pre-recession days, many shoppers shunned dollar stores too, preferring to pay more at supermarkets, drugstores, and big box chains for goods of presumably better quality. My, how times have changed. More

Driving the recovery
Stores Magazine    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Lost among the headlines that have typically framed discussions of the now years-long "recovery" — the continuing high rates of unemployment and under-employment, a stagnant housing market and ongoing public sector austerity measures — is a bona fide economic success story: The retail industry has delivered 17 consecutive months of sales increases. To be sure, there were some months where the lift was barely perceptible, but against the current economic backdrop, sustained growth — however modest — stands out. More

Costco Wholesale drives deeper into Washington, DC, area
The Washington Post    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Discount retailer Costco Wholesale is making greater inroads into the Washington, D.C., area with plans for a new store on a 12-acre tract in Alexandria, one of three locations in the works in the region. Costco stands to gain grocery market share, albeit marginal, at a time when traditional players, like Food Lion and Superfresh, struggle to compete in a changing industry. Drug stores and big-box chains are muscling in on supermarkets with a wider selection of groceries. Value-oriented merchants, such as Costco, still hold a profitable stake in the industry and are finding room for growth. More

The best US cities for bargain shopping
Forbes    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
When international tourists arrive in Orlando, their first stop is rarely a Disney property, but one of the city's 500 factory outlet stores. And they're looking for a very specific item: an empty suitcase. According to Susan Lomax, the associate vice president of publicity for the city of Orlando, shopping has become the number one activity for international tourists visiting the city, drawn by the brand names at lower prices afforded by the country's most concentrated city for outlets.
