Apple granted US trademark for its retail store design

Apple's retail store design has been granted a trademark from the U.S. government, giving the company some protection from copycat retailers. The Cupertino, Calif., company's "clear glass storefront" design, complete with "large, rectangular horizontal panels over the top of the glass front," received trademark status last week from the U.S Patent and Trademark office. Macerich completes $500 million Green Acres Mall deal in New York

The Macerich Co. has completed its $500 million acquisition of the Green Acres Mall in Valley Stream, N.Y., closing a deal that's been in the works since last October. The shopping center owner and manager purchased the property from a subsidiary of New York-based Vornado Realty Trust. Vornado reported net proceeds from the sale were approximately $185 million following its repayment of the existing loan and closing costs. More

Kohl's, Whole Foods, Staples only retailers to make 100 percent green power users top 10 list

Kohl's Department Stores, Whole Foods Market and Staples are the only retailers named to the top 10 on the 100 Percent Green Power Users List by the EPA's annual Green Power Partnership lists. These retailers count themselves among group of more than 450 companies that are using 100 percent green power in their U.S. operations through renewable energy certificates, on-site generation and utility green power products, according to the EPA's list. More



Dollar General pushing toward 11,000 stores

Dollar General plans to add 635 stores and move 550 existing locations this year as part of its continuing expansion. Central Ohio is going to be part of that expansion. The discount retailer is building two stores, whose locations weren’t available yesterday, and is studying three other sites, spokeswoman Crystal Ghassemi said. Each store will employ between six and 10 workers, she said. More

The Fashion Fair Mall in Fresno, Calif., will be equipped with solar panels later this year as part of a nationwide installation project by Macerich at 12 of its mall properties on the east and west coasts. With preliminary designs calling for 1.4 megawatts of energy generating capacity, the installation planned for the Fresno mall is one of the largest being undertaken by Macerich and Panasonic Eco Solutions North America. Shopping center development in the Chicago area is on the rise after four years of decline, according to new report released by Mid-America Real Estate Corp. Construction of new shopping centers rose from 1.02 million square-feet in 2011 to 1.14 million square feet in 2012 with roughly 900,000 additional square feet expected this year, according to the report.
