sales for the notoriously sluggish month. Retail sales increased 3.3 percent compared with a year earlier, according to Thomson Reuters' tally of 29 major chain stores including Macy's Inc., Target Corp. and Gap Inc. More

Discount retailer Dollar General says it will add 5,000 jobs as it opens 600 new stores over the next 12 months. Shoppers have flocked to discount stores during the recession as they look to spend less money on their purchases. During the first nine months of its fiscal year, Dollar
General's profit surged while revenue rose 13 percent to $8.61 billion.

Off-price retailer TJX Cos Inc has capitalized on the woes of its higher-end rivals in the past year by snapping up tons of
their unsold merchandise and winning a new contingent of shoppers. But that success to some degree means that TJX relies on the miscalculations of its competitors and could be short-lived if full price chains cut back too far on orders and limit the amount of excess supply, analysts say.

Grocery-sector stocks have taken a drubbing the past three months, with Kroger Co. (which operates Smith's stores in Utah) down 14
