Staples to acquire Office Depot for $6 billion

Staples announced that it has reached an agreement to fully acquire its competitor Office Depot for $6.3 billion. Staples began discussions to acquire Office Depot back in September of 2014. While both companies' boards were in agreement, there were still legal hurdles to jump through. The two companies previously tried to merge back in the 1990s, but the deal was squashed by antitrust regulatory opposition from the Federal Trade Commission.

New technology warns of roof collapse during bad weather

New York drops in state ranking of 'green' building space

New York slid in the ranking of states in terms of using environmentally "green" building practices, dropping to No. 10 last year compared to fifth in 2013. That is according to the U.S. Green Building Council, which administers the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, or LEED, program that designates a building as green.

RadioShack files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy
The Washington Post
After years of struggling to adapt to the digital era, RadioShack filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Under the agreement, hedge fund Standard General will purchase up to 2,400 of RadioShack's stores. Of the stores purchased by Standard General, wireless carrier Sprint will establish a "store within a store" model in up to 1,750 of them. The company plans to close the rest of the stores that it owns, which currently number 4,000.

Tiffany & Co. will open its first free-standing Ottawa location at Rideau Centre, replacing a shuttered shop-in-store concession within the city's recently closed Holt Renfrew. Downtown Ottawa's Rideau Centre is seeing a significant expansion which will see Nordstrom open its second Canadian location next month, as well as La Maison Simons a year later.

DOE invests $59 million to drive solar technology innovation, deployment

Kohl's: Sales surged back in retailer's fourth quarter

The crucial Christmastime rush appears to have paid off for Kohl's Corp., which updated its fourth-quarter guidance. Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin-based Kohl's reported fourth-quarter comparable store sales up 3.7 percent, upping its predicted earning per share to between $4.20 and $4.22. It marks a resurgence after several previous quarters of dipping same-store sales.

US Department of Energy releases new standards for fluorescent lights

At the end of 2014, the U.S. Department of Energy released new energy-efficiency standards for linear fluorescent lights that will effectively and significantly lower electric bills in the national building sector. These new lighting standards are one of many released by the DOE, which finalized minimum energy-efficiency standards late last year for 10 product categories, which also included commercial refrigeration equipment, furnace fans and external power supplies such as the black box chargers needed to power our laptop computers and cellphones.

Advances in antimicrobial coatings for surfaces
