Here at the SIMA headquarters in Milwaukee, we are facing the coldest temperatures in 20 years and we have not yet reached the halfway point for winter. Target vendor says hackers breached data link used for billing

The Target Corp hackers managed to break into its payments network by first breaching a "data connection" between the U.S. retailer and its heating and ventilation systems contractor, a representative for the contractor said.

Ikea cuts CO2 emissions by 19.3 percent

Ikea Group cut carbon emissions by 19.3 percent in 2013 compared to its fiscal 2010 baseline, relative to sales, which is slightly above 2012 figures, according to its newly released fiscal 2013 sustainability report.

Walmart to invest $450 million to ramp up its grocery business in Canada
Forbes
Amid its struggling business in the U.S., Mexico, Brazil and China, retail giant Walmart has decided to strengthen its operations in Canada. Recently, Walmart Canada's chief executive announced that the company will be spending close to C$500 million (U.S.$452.35 million) in fiscal 2015 (CY 2014) to boost its grocery business and e-commerce operations. It is planning to open six new supercenters (which offer a full line of groceries), expand 10 existing stores, and add fresh food items to 19 stores.

US regulator calls for better data-breach disclosures

A top U.S. financial regulator told lawmakers that retailers and other companies that deal with customer payments should have the same obligation as banks to report data breaches. The call for a uniform disclosure regime comes after cyber criminals managed to pull off a massive theft of customer data from retailer Target Corp. during the holiday shopping season in late 2013.

CVS' tobacco exit draws reaction, applause

CVS Caremark Corp.'s decision to pull tobacco products from store shelves as of Oct. 1 has drawn reaction from all corners, from the oval office to a drugstore competitor. "I applaud this morning's news that CVS Caremark has decided to stop selling cigarettes and other tobacco products in its stores, and begin a national campaign to help millions of Americans quit smoking instead," said President Barack Obama shortly after the announcement.

Major retailers expect stronger sales in 2014

Retail sales growth will speed up, albeit slightly in 2014, rising 4.1 percent compared with an estimated 3.7 percent gain in 2013, the National Retail Federation said. The Washington, D.C. based trade group which represents retailers such as Walmart and Target, cited a number of factors including modest recovery in the economy and labor market.
