Family Dollar Stores is looking to increase its private-label penetration, particularly around food and other consumables, officials said during an investor presentation. Kenneth Smith, Family Dollar's chief financial
officer, said the company sees an opportunity to increase consumable private-label sales from current levels of 10 percent of sales to 15 percent to 20 percent. Storewide, Smith said Family Dollar plans to increase private brand penetration from its current 19 percent level to 25 percent penetration.

In a flurry of announcements, Wal-Mart Canada plans to build an energy efficient distribution center, as well as add wind and solar to its operations. In a bid to share sustainability best practices, the retailer also has launched a Web site, ShareGreen.ca, which includes case studies
of sustainability practices at firms such as Heinz, PepsiCo, HP, Home Depot, Canon and others.

Store closings could keep piling up throughout first half of 2010

So far the pace of
announced closings has been noticeably slower than in 2009, when a glut of retailers announced mass closures, bankruptcies or liquidations soon after the holiday shopping season concluded. By this time last year, seven major retailers had filed for bankruptcy and about a dozen others announced mass closings. That's not how things have played out so far this year.

Visa Inc. said it plans to offer its No Signature Required program to the majority of merchant categories in the United States beginning July 2010. Under the new expanded program, retailers can accept U.S.-issued Visa cards for domestic transactions totaling $25 or less without

to declare the worst over for the retail sector. Like the broader market, retail stocks are trading lower, with few exceptions. What gives? Brian Sozzi, a retail analyst for Wall Street Strategies, says investors are realizing that the continued cost-cutting by retailers is not going to pack the same punch as last year.
