Walmart, Macys among World's Top 10 Most Innovative Companies in Retail
Fast Company
No industry has been more transfigured in the past year than retail. Stores now behave like websites, tracking customers as they browse. American malls have pretty much died (but may be on their way back to life). And in some parts of the country, you can have your milk and eggs home-delivered, along with your new iPod, on the same day. Those who lead the field strike the right balance between physical and digital, experience and affordability, and convenience and quality.

Intelligibility and mass notification systems
Today's Facility Manager
A mass notification system is designed to clearly communicate with people during a catastrophic disaster or threat, steering them away from danger and toward safety. There are two classifications of the MNS: wide-area, providing real-time information to outdoor areas, and in-building, providing information and instruction to people inside a building by way of intelligible voice communications and often, visible signals, text, and graphics.

Luxury businesses find fertile ground in Boston
The Boston Globe
Stores selling luxury goods — once modest and often isolated outposts of high couture in Boston — are rapidly multiplying, with opulent showrooms to display $9,500 Chanel evening bags and $1,125 Hermès shawls. More than two dozen high-fashion brands have opened stores in the Back Bay in the past few years, while several longtime anchors have turned small showrooms into multi-floor meccas of shimmering goods.

Walmart's Canadian expansion adds fuel to grocery wars
The Globe and Mail
Shelley Broader, chief executive officer of Walmart Canada Corp., has a rallying cry for the discount giant: Fresh food in every store. Broader, a former U.S. grocery executive, is at the forefront of this country's vicious retail food fight as she races to add more low-cost items – especially fresh produce and meat – to even more Walmart outlets. In the process, she's stealing business from incumbents, forcing them to lower their costs.

High-performing buildings require highly-qualified engineers
By Peter Rojeski, Jr.
Many buildings have been designed to be energy efficient, but without proper "tuning" they will never achieve their potential. Like high-performance race cars, a high-performing building has many delicate control points that need to be periodically monitored and adjusted in order to maintain peak operating efficiency. It is not uncommon for the engineering design team, the equipment manufacturer and the operating engineer to work for a year or more in an effort to tune up a new building so that it performs as efficiently as predicted by the design simulation.

Ram raids' are an alarming new trend in retail theft
STORES
Cars, vans, SUVs and pick-up trucks crash through storefronts all the time, but these are usually accidental "pedal error" incidents. In fact, there are 50 to 60 such incidents every day, according to Storefront Safety Council co-founder Rob Reiter. "Starbucks gets hit once a week, 7-Eleven gets hit about one and a half times a day. In fact, for convenience stores altogether, it's about 20 times a day," says Reiter, who has been tracking vehicle-into-building crashes for more than a decade.
