Retailer Abercrombie & Fitch said that its fourth-quarter profit fell 32.1 percent, to 53 cents per share excluding one-time items. The teen apparel and accessories peddler's bottom line was dragged down by costs related to the closure of its Ruehl stores.
Excluding Ruehl closing-related charges, Abercrombie earned 91 cents per share, topping analysts' consensus call for a profit of 87 cents per share. More

Walgreen Co. will purchase
New York-based drugstore chain Duane Reade Holdings from affiliates of Oak Hill Capital Partners for about $1.075 billion, including the assumption of debt. The transaction would include all 257 Duane Reade stores located in the New York City metropolitan area, as well as the corporate office and two distribution centers.

Jones Apparel, parent company of Nine West, Anne Klein and Easy Spirit, will close 166 specialty retail stores this year. The
New York-based company declined to say which stores it will close, but indicated that most of the closures will be of mall-based specialty retail stores so that the company can better focus on its outlet stores.

Skype announced a major deal with Verizon
Wireless that would make its inexpensive online-calling service available to up to 90 million Verizon users, vastly expanding Skype's presence on smartphones. "This is an important step in making Skype available anytime, anywhere," Skype CEO Josh Silverman says. The deal gives Verizon customers with smartphones and data plans the option of making unlimited calls to hundreds of millions of Skype users worldwide, beginning next month.

Wal-Mart posts strong quarterly profit but issues a cautionary note

Retail giant Wal-Mart Stores Inc. reported a 22 percent increase in profit for the fourth quarter but said an important measure of sales fell and cautioned that it expected a challenging
start to the year for its U.S. business. For the quarter ended Jan. 31, the world's largest retailer said profit was $4.63 billion, or $1.21 a share, up from $3.79 billion, or 96 cents, in the year-earlier quarter.

Asda plans to open 100 smaller format stores in the next three to five years, according to analysts at JPMorgan. In a note, JPMorgan said Asda set out the plans at a supplier conference last week. The U.K.'s second-biggest supermarket also intends to open 150 non-food stores, in what
would be an acceleration of the roll-out of its Asda Living format, JPMorgan said.
