Street retail comes into vogue for REITs
National Real Estate Investor
Before regional malls, grocery-anchored strips and outlet centers, there was street retail. Nearly every city, regardless of size, had a shopping district, maybe just one street or perhaps an entire neighborhood. In many places, it fell out of favor and into disrepair as people abandoned urban centers and moved to the suburbs. But today, with millennials and empty nesters moving back to the cities, more retail investors are looking at street retail, and those that have owned this type of asset for a while are increasing their allocation to it.

Why Sleepy's is dominating the Manhattan, New York, retail real estate game
Bloomberg
You can't walk more than a couple blocks in Manhattan without passing a Starbucks, Chase bank, or Duane Reade. But there's an unexpected chain that's also becoming ubiquitous in New York City: mattress retailer Sleepy's. The Long-Island, New York-based company has more than 30 locations in pricey Manhattan alone. The store has more locations in the borough than Gap, Whole Foods, and Best Buy combined. That's no mean feat, considering that the average American replaces a mattress only once every 10 years.
