West Edmonton Mall: Canada's biggest mall completes country's biggest first mortgage bond financing
The Financial Post
A $900-million equity offering, or for that matter a $900-million corporate debt raising is not quite a ho-hum affair but it is still a fairly de rigeur occurrence in the capital markets. On the other hand, a $900-million first mortgage bond is a very rare event, so rare in fact that a deal of that size based on a single building, has never been seen before in Canada.

Assessing risk in preparation for a disaster recovery plan
By Curtis Fease
Anyone involved in facility management knows how difficult it can be to manage a building properly. One of the most important parts of facility management, however, is also one of the most overlooked. Having a disaster recovery plan in place is essential for building managers, but there is no "one size fits all" answer to developing these plans. This is why it's so imperative for those who manage facilities to properly assess their specific risks when preparing a DRP, and the following four steps can assist in doing just that.

Tricks of the trade: Fire extinguisher codes
Today's Facility Manager
Q: We are trying to determine the national fire extinguisher code requirements for vacant buildings, and I have been getting a variety of answers. If we have a vacant property with no combustible materials, are our clients required by code to keep fire extinguishers up to date? There have been cases of people breaking into properties and spraying the extinguishers. In a recent case there were extinguishers left outside, and they used the extinguishers to break into a door.

Demographic shifts contribute to the changing face of retail
NPR
So far this year, retail chains have announced some heavy cuts. J.C. Penney said it would close 33 stores. Macy's said it would lay off 2,500 workers. Sears will close its flagship Chicago store in April. That's creating a glut of excess space. But that's just one of several forces changing the face of retail.
