One strategy they’ve employed has been to close underperforming stores. But Best Buy and an increasing number of companies are trying another strategy, too — going smaller. More

While Walmart maintained the No. 1 position on Interbrand's U.S. Most Valuable Retail Brands list for 2012, several other retailers are moving up the ranks. Although Walmart touts a value that's more than $139 billion, this year also marked a 2 percent decrease for the big box retailer, Interbrand said. General Growth to buy 11 Sears department store sites

Sears Holdings Corp. plans to raise $270 million by selling 11 of its full-line department store locations to Chicago-based General Growth Properties Inc. Chico's FAS Inc. said it will focus more on its higher margin and pricier White House/Black Market brand after full-price selling at those stores helped the clothes retailer beat holiday-quarter estimates. Costco has committed a further $140 million to step up its burgeoning operations in Australia, earmarking the fresh capital injection for the rollout of three more warehouse-style stores and placing further competitive pressure on Coles and Woolworths. The Australian arm of Costco is believed to have a second site in Sydney it is keen to acquire and build on, and is eyeing a maiden push into Queensland in the next 18 months. More

The latest American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) indicates that overall, consumers were slightly more satisfied with retailers in 2011, compared to the year before. Some shopping experiences were much more satisfying than others, though. As for brick-and-mortar-based retailers, Nordstrom scored highest among department stores, Costco won the Specialty Retail Stores category, and supermarket shoppers are most satisfied with the Publix chain. Apple's first Amsterdam retail store set to open March 3

Next month, Apple will expand its retail operations to its 12th country when a new storefront opens in the Netherlands. The Amsterdam location will be on the ground floor and mezzanine of the city's historic Hirsch Building in Leidseplein Square. The two levels will be connected by a glass spiral staircase, which is a defining feature of many of Apple's retail locations. More

The fall-off followed a revised 0.4 percent pop in November, an indication that shoppers had both completed their Christmas shopping early and were cautious consumers during the holiday season, analysts said.
