Home improvement retailers see glints of rebound
The New York Times Share
After more than a year of not spending money on their homes, consumers began refurbishing their kitchens and painting their living rooms in what appears to be the early stages of a comeback for the home improvement industry.
Home Depot and Lowe's, the nation's largest home improvement retailers, posted better-than-expected earnings. They said that they did not have to turn to discounts as much as they did last year, and that some customers splurged on higher-priced goods and services like carpet installations. More

After a tumultuous, three-year development process that included the disbanding and reorganization of the committee charged with its creation, the long-awaited first code-enforceable green building standard in the nation has been approved and published. According to
an estimate by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), Standard 189.1 could lead to site energy savings between 10 and 34 percent over Standard 90.1-2007, based on the minimum prescriptive recommendations of the new standard—and possibly even higher, since further energy-saving measures were incorporated after the NREL inquiry.

Seven of the top 10 U.S. companies that were ranked by Business Week as being the best of the best in customer service in 2010 were
retail companies. More than half of the total list of 25 Customer Service Champs for 2010 are members of the retail industry. This is to be expected since retailing is all about customer contact. You can't really separate excellent retailing from excellent customer service.

Consumers were more willing in recent months to treat themselves to things they did not need, like baubles and little black dresses. But only if those indulgences could be had for recession-friendly prices. That was

uses a MasterCard or Visa, Lipert pays a percentage — usually around 2 percent — in order for those payments to be processed.

Wal-Mart wants suppliers to cut greenhouse gas emissions
USA Today

Wal-Mart Stores, the world's largest retailer, says it wants its suppliers to eliminate 20 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions by the end of 2015. The discounter's push
for what it says is the equivalent of taking 3.8 million cars off the road for a year goes beyond its effort to reduce its own emissions by designing more energy-efficient stores and taking other steps.
