US retail chains see 1st profit decline since recession
Bloomberg
U.S. retailers last quarter suffered their darkest days since the recession. With results in from 62 of 122 retail chains, the industry has posted its first profit quarterly drop since the economic contraction that ended in 2009, according to Retail Metrics Inc. Revenue also rose at the lowest rate since that year, the research firm found.

Walmart tests new WAVE concept truck
Green Retail Decisions
Walmart has just begun formally testing Walmart Advanced Vehicle Experience (WAVE) concept truck, which will be 20 percent more aerodynamic than trucks in its existing fleet. Current trucks have a micro-turbine hybrid powertrain that can run on diesel, natural gas and biodiesel, according to the company's The Green Room blog post by Doug McMillon, president and CEO of Walmart Stores Inc.

Declaring they no longer fit the retailer's business model, 7-Eleven Inc. has put 72 of its gasoline stations and/or convenience stores up for sale, as reported in a 21st Century Tobacco/CSP Daily News Flash. The sale, arranged by NRC Realty & Capital Advisors LLC, includes 22 locations in Texas, 17 in South Carolina, 12 in Pennsylvania, nine in Ohio, four in Michigan, three in Indiana, three in West Virginia, one in Florida and one in Utah.

Tim Hortons aims to improve returns, add 800 Canada, US stores

Canadian coffee and doughnut chain Tim Hortons Inc. said that it will open at least 800 new restaurants over the next five years under a strategic plan to secure its dominance in Canada and boost returns in the United States. Facing mounting competition from tough rivals such as Starbucks Corp. and McDonald's Corp., the company said it plans to reduce capital intensity while improving returns to shareholders and on assets.

Sony to close two-thirds of its US retail stores

Sony announced that it is shuttering 20 of its 31 retail stores located throughout the States. The 11 remaining stores are located near major markets. This shouldn't come as much of a surprise. As the company's press release states, this move is designed to place Sony in a more competitive stance.
