Retailers' sales rise, but gas prices threaten

Top retailers posted stronger-than-expected sales gains for February, a show of strength that could dissipate this spring as rising gasoline and food prices take their toll. The 25 retailers in the Thomson Reuters same-store sales index reported a rise of 4.2 percent in sales at stores open at least a year, beating forecasts of a 3.6 percent increase. Luxury retailer Saks Inc. and Victoria's Secret parent Limited Brands Inc. had among the biggest gains, while discounter Target Corp. and Gap Inc. missed analysts' forecasts. More

Calgary to lead Canada in retail sales growth

The Calgary region will lead Canada this year in the rate of annual growth for retail sales among the country's major markets. A Retail Sales Outlook report by KubasPrimedia indicates the Calgary census metropolitan area will see sales climb by 6.4 percent in 2011 to $23.9 billion. More

Overall, same-store sales rose 4.2 percent, and 65.2 percent of retailers beat expectations, while 34.8 percent missed, according to Thomson Reuters. More

Discount retailer Loehmann's emerges from Chapter 11

Discount retailer Loehmann's said it has emerged from bankruptcy protection, which it sought in November after its Dubai government-linked owner failed to reach a debt-extension deal with creditors. New York-based Loehmann's said it secured $45 million in financing while saying its restructuring eliminated $110 million in long-term bond debt, $14 million in interests and included $23 million in other cost reductions. 3 shopping centers going solar in Woodbury, Minn.

The Robert Muir Co., a shopping center developer, is installing a total of 130 kilowatts of solar energy on three Woodbury, Minn., shopping centers this year. Four solar arrays, or groupings of solar panels, will be installed atop two of the centers soon. In January, a 10-kilowatt array atop the Shoppes of Woodbury Village started generating electricity. Walmart bans controversial flame retardant from products

In another example of how Walmart can use its bulk to force widespread changes, the world's largest retailer has banned the use of a class of flame retardants in the products it stocks. The company quietly banned polybrominated diphenyl ethers, or PBDEs, from some products a few years ago and recently notified suppliers it would begin testing products starting June 1 to ensure the chemical isn't being used. More
