Retailers report gains for February
The Associated Press via NPR Share
Many retailers reported solid sales gains for February, even in the face of falling consumer confidence and heavy snowstorms that hammered much of the country. Macy's Inc., Limited Brands Inc. and The Wet Seal Inc. all posted results that beat Wall Street analysts' estimates.
The upbeat news also helped sooth fears among some economists that weak consumer spending might make the economic recovery short-lived.… The overall 3.7 percent gain in February, according to the International Council of Shopping Centers's index of 31 merchants, came in the face of a decline in consumer confidence, high joblessness and tight credit. JC Penney to focus on exclusives, sees malls return
Reuters
Share

Department stores must keep ramping
up exclusive lines of clothing and accessories if they are to win market share from rivals and thrive in the still sluggish U.S. consumer spending environment, JC Penney Co. Chief Executive Myron Ullman said. The need to avoid what industry analysts have derided as "the sea of sameness" of department stores' product assortments and layout has prompted leading retailers to beef up their big-name exclusives in recent years to win shoppers.

Mall operator given extra time to reorganize
The New York Times
Share

A federal judge on granted General Growth Properties four more months of exclusivity to file its bankruptcy reorganization plan, giving the company, a mall operator, some breathing room as it fends off an unsolicited $10 billion takeover bid from the
Simon Property Group. The four months is less than General Growth had requested, but still gives the company more time to prepare a complicated recapitalization proposal in which it is working with Brookfield Asset Management.

In malls, book superstores sideline smaller cousins
The Detroit News
Share

The small-scale mall bookstore, once ubiquitous in regional shopping centers across the country, is giving way to something bigger: the book superstore. Two mall mainstays, Waldenbooks and B. Dalton, subsidiaries of bookseller behemoths Borders Group Inc. and Barnes & Noble Inc.,
respectively, closed in droves in January, faced with irrelevancy against superstores' wide selections, coffee bars and social hubs, and their digital counterpart, e-readers that offer limitless portable content anytime.
