Massive retail theme park proposed for Northwest Miami-Dade Florida

The company behind the largest mall in America wants to expand into northwestern Miami-Dade with a massive, 200-acre entertainment complex that could become the largest mall in the world, with submarine rides, a Legoland, sea lions and simulated ski slopes. Proposed under the name Americana World, the project at the intersection of Florida’s Turnpike and Interstate 75 in could cost as much as $4 billion to construct and probably become the largest private employer in Miami-Dade.

Lumber Liquidators responds to '60 Minutes' report on Chinese-made laminate flooring

Shares of Lumber Liquidators Holdings Inc. fell sharply, after a "60 Minutes" report alleged the U.S. retailer of hardwood flooring has installed Chinese-made laminate flooring in many American homes that contains far higher-than-accepted levels of formaldehyde, a chemical known to cause cancer. Shares of the Toano, Virginia–based Lumber Liquidators, closed down 25 percent, and were halted through the morning ahead of a news release. … Lumber Liquidators’ founder and chairman, Tom Sullivan, told "60 Minutes" that the tests weren't valid and said the company isn't required by law to test finished products, as the program did.

General Growth to get $907 million for 25 percent of Hawaii mall

General Growth Properties Inc. agreed to sell 25 percent of the Ala Moana Center in Honolulu to AustralianSuper Pty Ltd. General Growth will own 75 percent of the shopping mall, while AustralianSuper, the country's largest pension fund, will hold the rest, according to a statement. The transaction values Ala Moana Center at approximately $5.5 billion and will generate net proceeds of about $907 million for General Growth.

Survey: Only half of employees feel their facility is prepared for an emergency

Only half of employees believe their workplaces are prepared for a severe emergency, according to the third annual workplace safety survey by Staples, Inc. Nearly two-thirds of those polled said recent natural disasters have not led to their employers reassessing company safety plans. The survey, in honor of National Safety Month, also reveals that in the past six months nearly half of businesses have closed due to severe weather, costing the economy nearly $50 billion in lost productivity.

South Dakota using $300,000 to help retailers store ethanol

South Dakota is setting aside $300,000 to help the state's retailers install ethanol storage tank units at gas stations. The Governor's Office of Economic Development announced that it earmarked the funds for its Ethanol Infrastructure Incentive Program.

Target profit forecast tops estimates as CEO outlines plans

Target Corp. forecast profit for the current year that topped most analysts' estimates as Chief Executive Officer Brian Cornell laid out plans to improve the retailer's merchandise and trim costs through job cuts. Profit per share in the year through January will be $4.45 to $4.65, executives for the Minneapolis-based company said at a presentation to analysts in New York. Westfield Valley Fair shopping mall in Santa Clara, California, has confirmed a luxury cinema concept is coming to the West Coast for the first time — part of a $600 million expansion of the retail center that will also bring a previously announced Bloomingdale's. Kroger logs 45th consecutive quarter of growth

Kroger reported a same-store sales growth of 5.2 percent in the latest quarter, marking the supermarket's 45th consecutive quarter of growth. CEO Rodney McMullen said 2014 was "an outstanding year by all measures." He attributed much of this success to the employee and customer relationships that continue to generate loyalty. Profits were also gained by the sale of fuel — specifically the successful coupling of low retail fuel prices with unusually high fuel margins.
