The Ethisphere Institute has named 15 retailers in its newly released World's Most Ethical Companies list. The designation recognizes companies that "truly go beyond making statements about doing business ethically and translate those words into action," according to WME. Walgreens announced plans to build what the company believes will be the nation’s first net-zero energy retail store, which engineers predict will produce energy equal to or greater than it consumes. "We are committed to reducing our carbon footprint and leading the retail industry in use of green technology," stated Thomas Connolly, Walgreens VP facilities development. "We are investing in developing a net-zero store so we can learn the best way to bring these features to our other stores. Because we operate 8,000 stores, we believe our pursuit of green technology can have a significant positive impact on the nation’s environment." More

NRF backs legislation to repeal health care employer mandate
National Retail Federation
The National Retail Federation welcomed introduction of House and Senate legislation that would repeal the employer mandate provision of the health care reform law scheduled to take effect next year. "Eliminating the employer mandate would greatly aid the retail community, which is heavily dependent on labor," NRF Senior Vice President David French said. "One of every four jobs in the American economy is supported by retail, which would be jeopardized by the mandate effective in 2014. The employer mandate is already deterring job growth today at the expense of tomorrow’s economy."

Goodbye, big box? Canadian Tire thinks small to take on giant Target

The iconic Canadian retailer, whose big-box stores are a fixture in suburbs and towns across the country, will test a vastly smaller version in urban malls this summer. It’s also set to pilot a separate chain of outdoor recreation stores – and other specialty chains eventually – taking on so-called category killers such as U.S.-based Bass Pro Shops and Cabela in stores that could be as little as one-10th their size.
