Retail sales in US rise most in 4 months, spurred by employment gains
Bloomberg    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
U.S. retail sales climbed in February by the most in four months, spurred by job gains and more seasonable temperatures. The 1 percent increase in purchases followed a revised 0.7 percent rise in January that was more than double the previous estimate, Commerce Department figures showed in Washington. February sales, boosted by a jump in auto purchases and more expensive gasoline, matched the median forecast in a Bloomberg News survey. J.C. Penney Co. and Macy's Inc. were among retailers that topped analysts' same-store sales estimates, a sign household spending is holding up after the strongest quarterly gain in four years. While higher fuel costs are a headwind for American consumers, bigger paychecks stemming from a tax compromise reached by President Barack Obama and congressional Republicans may help support demand in coming months. The retail store of the future
TheStreet.com    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The Internet killed the music business, ruined the newspaper industry and has effectively brought the publishing world to its knees, and for years there has been speculation it would do the same to bricks-and-mortar retail stores, as consumers began to flock online for their shopping needs. These fears reached a fever pitch in recent months as such major retailers as Blockbuster and Borders, once thought to be powerhouses in the industry, have been forced into bankruptcy largely due to competition they faced from online services including Netflix and Amazon. But even with these setbacks, rumors of the death of the bricks-and-mortar store may be vastly overstated. More

Curbing copper capers
STORES    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
It's the middle of the day. A store is full of customers, and suddenly the power goes out. No lights. No way to ring up sales. … Time to call the utility provider. Only, in this particular instance, the utility provider did not have a blackout or a brownout. Instead, there were thieves on the roof, cutting the power lines on the exterior electrical panels so they could steal copper wiring. More

Heirloom tomatoes, coffee help attract foodies to US malls
Bloomberg    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Malls angling to reel in American shoppers are using groceries as bait. In some locations, they're bringing in supermarket chains to do the job.
