PRSM Association honors outstanding volunteers
with 2013 awards

PRSM
The Professional Retail Store Maintenance Association, (PRSM), the authority on retail, multi-site facilities management, announced recipients of its Volunteer of the Year and Service Excellence Awards, to be presented at PRSM2013 National Conference in Dallas. The PRSM Volunteer of the Year is awarded to an Association member who has made a significant difference in PRSM Association's goals, strategic direction and contributions to the retail facilities maintenance industry. This year's Volunteer of the Year recipient is Maryella Pegnato, Partner, Building Power LLC of Marina Del Rey, Calif.

$50 million makeover on tap for Herald Center in New York

New York's Herald Center, the thriving Herald Square area's ugly-duckling shopping and school destination between Manhattan Mall and Macy's, is getting a $50 million beautification and a repositioning to banish its discount-center aura. Owner JEMB Realty plans to replace all the black-tinted glass panels on the gloomy structure’s first three floors with transparent panes, as well as install LED lighting panels.

Walmart beats emissions goal a year early

Walmart has reported that it has delivered a 20 percent cut in greenhouse gas emissions since 2005, beating its target one year ahead of schedule. The company's 2011 figures show a 20.02 percent decrease in emissions from the Walmart stores, Sam's Clubs and distribution centers that existed in 2005, Bloomberg reported, surpassing the goal that had been set for 2012.

JC Penney chief is trying to stitch together a turnaround

Target to open 3 more clinics in Chicago area stores

Target Corp. said it plans to open three new clinics in Chicago area stores. The clinics, which provide walk-in medical care for minor illnesses and injuries, will be in the stores in Willlowbrook, South Elgin and on Peterson Avenue in Chicago. Construction will begin May 28 with grand openings scheduled for Aug. 18.

A&P to sell interests in some noncore stores

The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co. Inc. (A&P) has revealed that it has contracted to sell its real estate interests in what the company described as "a few non-core store locations." According to Montvale, N.J.-based A&P, "The pending deals are a combination of leasehold sales and sale-leaseback transactions that are expected to generate proceeds for the company in excess of $130 million."

Men's Wearhouse: Investors like the way it looks

Shares of The Men's Wearhouse jumped 20 percent after management ironed out a few wrinkles in the company story. Men's Wearhouse reported a loss of seven cents per share, or $3.4 million, for its fiscal-fourth quarter, which ended Feb. 2. While that result was two cents worse than analysts expected, the stock moved higher on two positives: The company is considering the sale of its K&G discount-clothing business, or other strategic alternatives, and the board approved a share repurchase program of $200 million.

Target buys two online kitchenware chains

Target Corp. has made two e-commerce acquisitions aimed at expanding its presence in the growing cooking and kitchenware market. The retailer said it has acquired CHEFS Catalog and assets of Cooking.com in two separate transactions. Following the closings, the two businesses will be combined to create a new, wholly owned subsidiary of Target. Both brands will continue to operate under their current names.
